Replacing dozens of legacy applications with centralised digital services.

Background

Border Force were in the process of replacing multiple legacy IT systems and needed to migrate dozens of ‘grey IT applications’ that had been built up around the legacy systems. Many of these had hard cut-off dates as the legacy systems that they were based on were being switched off.

Viable Data actions

We used our experience of developing digital services for the UK Government and meeting the Government Digital Service standard to rapidly conduct user research, build prototypes and develop working digital services. Our approach enabled the delivery of new digital services into the hands of frontline staff within three months of starting work on a product.

Outputs and results

By delivering the replacement services on schedule, Border Force were able to decommission legacy systems on time, saving significant costs and avoiding the potential for losing access to key capabilities that supported core business processes.
